Kedarnath - The trek: Located at the foot of the Garhwal Himalayas at 3,583 meters, Kedarnath is where time seems to stand still. The day starts at Gaurikund, where trekkers don boots for a challenging but rewarding 16-kilometer ascent. Every step along the way is sacred, with the Mandakini River flowing alongside as a constant companion. Walking is a test of determination. When you approach the temple, a fresh breeze and the occasional Garoa will test your resolve. But when you get close to the temple, fatigue disappears. The view of the majestic Kedarnath Temple standing tall with the snow-capped peaks in the backdrop is nothing short of amazing.
Legend of the Pandavas: According to legend, the Pandavas built temples to atone for their sins after the Mahabharata War. While fleeing from the Pandavas, Lord Shiva took the form of a cow and disappeared on Earth at Kedarnath. It is believed that this temple was built on the site where Lord Shiva disappeared.
Legend of Nar and Narayana: According to legend, the sage duo Nar and Narayan performed penance and asked Lord Shiva to reside in Kedarnath forever. Shiva agreed, and since then, he has resided in the Shiv Linga Triangle. The temple is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas, the holiest Hindu temples of Lord Shiva. It is also one of the four sacred shrines of India, known as the Char Dhams.
Tungnath Trail: Where mountains whisper fairy tales: If the Do Dham Yatra is about grandeur, then the Tungnath Yatra is about intimacy with the Himalayas. Tungnath Temple, the highest in the world at 3,680 meters, is a place where myth and nature come together.
The road to Tungnath: Your trip begins in Chopta, often referred to as the 'Mini Switzerland of the Northern Block.' The 3.5-kilometer trek to Tungnath is a dream for nature lovers. At every step, you are surrounded by overhanging grass trees, rhododendrons in full bloom, and views of towering peaks like Nanda Devi and Chaukhamba. Arriving at the temple is like walking into an ancient story. According to legend, the arms of Lord Shiva appeared here, making it a holy place for those seeking blessings and inner peace.
The journey does not stop at Tungnath. A short but pleasant climb takes you to the 4,000-meter peak at Chandrashila. The view from here is pure magic—360-degree views of the Himalayas that will leave you speechless. Lord Rama is said to have meditated here, and standing on this hill gives you a deep connection with history and spirituality.
